Creating Your Own DIY Writer's Retreat
(Or Getting So Into Your Writing that You Forget to Check Your Phone)
Even when a writer doesn't have a "room of their own," a writer still needs time and space to focus on the work at hand. Certain papers, projects and assignments require our sustained engagement or immersion, or what Cal Newport has called "deep work." In this SkillShop, you'll find a set-up that uniquely supports your deep and dedicated focus, without interruption. To complete your papers and projects this semester, you'll plan a "writer's retreat" for yourself that excites and inspires you. We'll identify no-cost, creative, and effective strategies for supporting your best thinking and work. The session will prompt you to think about what enables your productivity, and you'll mark out dates on your calendar this semester for a "writer's retreat" that you'll design for yourself. Bring your calendar and syllabi to this session. If possible, also bring a photo of where you do most of your writing (optional).
